How does ChiliTech RED work?
ChiliTech RED speeds up the delivery and presentation of Web
pages using a combination of compression and caching of text and
graphics data, both at the customer's computer and through the
ChiliTech Network. The result is a dramatic improvement in performance
when you browse using a dial-up connection. The benefits are especially
pronounced when you are viewing dynamic HTML pages, such as are
used by the most popular Web sites.

How does the ChiliTech Red/Propel
solution compare to DSL or cable modem?
ChiliTech RED is an affordable software-only solution designed
to significantly enhance Web access over low-speed (less than
200 kbps/second) connections. By contrast, DSL and cable modems
provide high-speed Internet connectivity using hardware solutions
that work with special telephone or cable lines. The price for
DSL or cable modem is significantly higher than ChiliTech RED.
In addition to the higher price, many areas simply do not have
DSL or cable Internet service available.

RED/Propel?
When ChiliTech RED is enabled, the Propel menu will contain a
command to "Disable Propel". Select this command to disable Propel.
When disabled, the menu will contain a command to "Enable Propel".

Does ChiliTech RED work with
Netscape?
Yes. ChiliTech RED works well with Netscape 4.7 or later. However,
you'll first need to make some simple changes to your Netscape
browser Preferences, specifically proxy server settings. A little
background: As part of the acceleration process, ChiliTech RED
uses a "proxy server" on your computer. A proxy server is a local
(meaning "on your computer") program that manages Web traffic
to and from your browser. The following changes apply to Netscape
versions 6, 7
and 4.7:
Obtaining ChiliTech RED's Port Number First,
you need to determine the proxy port number that ChiliTech RED
is using. By default this number is 8080, however Propel will
assign another number if a port number conflict is detected during
the installation process. Follow these steps to check the ChiliTech
RED proxy port number:
- If you have not already done so, download and install ChiliTech
RED.
- Click the small blue ChiliTech RED icon (located in the task
bar by the system clock).
- Click Options...
- Click Advanced...
- Note the port number. You will need this number to configure
Netscape to work with ChiliTech RED.
- Click OK.
Setting Netscape's HTTP Proxy Address and Port Number
Follow these steps to set the Netscape HTTP proxy address and
port number:
- Click on the Netscape Edit menu.
- Select Preferences...
- Double click on the Advanced category.
- Click on Proxies.
- Click View [Netscape 4.7 only]
- Make sure that the "Manual proxy configuration" radio button
is selected.
Important: If your system is already using an HTTP
proxy, write down the proxy name and its corresponding port
number and save the information. You will need it if you ever
stop using ChiliTech RED.
- Click in the HTTP Proxy area and enter localhost.
- Click in the HTTP Port area and enter the ChiliTech RED port
number (by default 8080, but you should verify this as described
above).
- Click OK. Try accessing your favorite Web sites; your Internet
experience should be accelerated.
